Stopping abruptly, Lily spun on her heel to face James who was standing at the top of the stairs staring down at her.

"So that's it then? She makes one small mistake and you let her go? Like she's nothing? Like you two have nothing?" she felt her chest rise up and down, her hands clenching and unclenching at her sides as she fought the rage burning through her body.

"She betrayed me," he said softly never taking his eyes off her.

"Betrayed you?" she frowned and shook her head in bewilderment. "How? How did she betray you?" she rummaged through her brain trying to think of a plausible reason for James to say that Sarah had betrayed him and came up with nothing.

"She..." shaking his head he dragged a hand through his hair, sighing." I can't say, but she betrayed me and someone else I care about."

Still frowning Lily looked over her shoulder in the direction Sarah had gone, recalling the horrid comments that had been thrown at her she felt her gut clench.

"Maybe she did," she said slowly, lifting her eyes to meet his, "but I'm not going to let her throw herself into a pit of poisonous snakes either. I can't," she narrowed her eyes, waiting for the angry comment she was sure he'd make.

To her surprise he simply nodded, glancing towards the Great Hall he gave her a faint smile.

"I know you can't," the smile turned bitter, and Lily wasn't sure if it was pity at her or sadness at what had happened in his eyes, but she knew it made her uneasy, "and I really hope she's worth it. For your sake."

With that he squared his shoulders and ran his hand through his hair again.

"I better find Sirius, if he finds her before you get to her, a pit of poisonous snakes will seem like a merciful fate in comparison," and with that he turned and continued up the second flight of stairs, leaving Lily to stare after him for a few seconds until her mind kicked back into gear.

She had to find Sarah, and quickly. Then she'd have to find out what had happened, even if it meant scaring it out of her.

Hopefully Sarah had calmed down and taken a moment to rethink her actions before she reached the Pitch, because if she hadn't... Well, Lily didn't want to have to pick her friend, even if said friend had a questionable sense of loyalty, off the Pitch.

Hoping Amy wouldn't get distracted and leave her bag in the Great Hall, Lily tore after Sarah, trying to come up with a plan to get Sarah out of whatever situation she'd likely gotten herself into by now.
